One client’s experience is worth a thousand words…

Each of the photographs lining the walls of the home on 9 Selman Street in Marblehead tell a colorful story of the rich lifetime of its occupants, Arthur “Huck” and Katherine Finnerty. Michael, their son, is home as well, along with his wife, Michelle. Michael’s childhood was, in his own words, “truly nomadic.” Huck’s tour with the U.S. Air Force took the family to Texas, California, Hawaii, Japan and Virginia. “Throughout all these years as an Air Force brat the two things that gave me a sense of stability and well-being was the closeness of our family and the old manse on Selman Street which remained an anchor in a sea of change,” he says. For years Michael and Michelle had made New York City their home. Coastal Care has been involved with the Finnerty’s care since 1999, when Katherine was hospitalized, and Huck was in poor health as well. Coastal’s services helped to stabilize their situation then and again in 2003. It was during a visit to Marblehead this past January that it became apparent to Michael that both parents were having serious health issues. Michael called Coastal Care to help him through each health crisis by providing personal care, resources, and guidance. “An important aspect of the success of any home care program is to involve the client in the planning process,” commented Catherine Brown, Coastal Care president. “Many people are unaware that these types of services are available, until, like the Finnertys, a crisis occurs,” she added. Michael Finnerty is glad that Coastal was there for his parents and himself. “When it came time for us to decide whether or not to return home to provide that same sense of stability for my parents, my wife and I did not hesitate to make what we still feel was a very good decision,” he says.

Michael and Michelle moved back home to Marblehead in April. Coastal Care has been with them every step of the way. Michael and Michelle realize how fortunate they are to be able to make such a move. They have been able to continue their careers from Marblehead, working out of a home office in the Asian Room of the house, furnished with purchases made during the family’s stay in Japan. Michael is grateful to Coastal Care and all the other people who have aided their plan to keep the family together. “Thanks to the unparalleled performance of all the people involved in this endeavor, two generations now reside under the same roof,” he adds. Michael states, “There are many devoted children who would like to take this path, but are unable to. But to those who may have this capability and are unsure of whether to take such a big step, Michelle and I can only say that the work is hard but the rewards are immeasurable. For the greatest of family values is how much we value our family,” he says.
