Each of the photographs lining the walls of the home on 9 Selman Street in Marblehead tell a colorful story of the rich lifetime of its occupants, Arthur “Huck” and Katherine Finnerty. Michael, their son, is home as well, along with his wife, Michelle. Michael’s childhood was, in his own words, “truly nomadic.” Huck’s tour with the U.S. Air Force took the family to Texas, California, Hawaii, Japan and Virginia. “Throughout all these years as an Air Force brat the two things that gave me a sense of stability and well-being was the closeness of our family and the old manse on Selman Street which remained an anchor in a sea of change,” he says. For years Michael and Michelle had made New York City their home. Coastal Care has been involved with the Finnerty’s care since 1999, when Katherine was hospitalized, and Huck was in poor health as well. Coastal’s services helped to stabilize their situation then and again in 2003. It was during a visit to Marblehead this past January that it became apparent to Michael that both parents were having serious health issues. Michael called Coastal Care to help him through each health crisis by providing personal care, resources, and guidance. “An important aspect of the success of any home care program is to involve the client in the planning process,” commented Catherine Brown, Coastal Care president. “Many people are unaware that these types of services are available, until, like the Finnertys, a crisis occurs,” she added. Michael Finnerty is glad that Coastal was there for his parents and himself. “When it came time for us to decide whether or not to return home to provide that same sense of stability for my parents, my wife and I did not hesitate to make what we still feel was a very good decision,” he says. |
